when the key is turned to the on position ONLY the starter engages and keeps running while the engine is running. if you put it in N,D,R,1,2, THE STARTER STOPS BUT IF YOU TRY AND PUT IT BACK IN PARK THE STARTER TRYS TO ENGAGE

Hi John, That is a common issue when the starter solenoid starts to wear out and begins to stick. Replacement of the solenoid and or starter should clear up the problem.
