Toy music box http://www.tigertribe.com.au/jewellery-b… with a ballerina inside - the music no longer plays when the box is opened. The box does not appear to have been overwound because there was room for me to wind the key. My daughter told me that she’d pulled the ballerina off her pedestal and that was when the music stopped playing. My four-year-old is heartbroken. I’d love some help with fixing this.
Well, when she pulled the ballerina off, it could have damaged something
You see the big golden like sphere is where the spring is held, on the other side is where the wind up is at. The elongated cylinder aka the drum is where the notes are, the ballerina is attached to the end of the drum, so it can rotate as the drum rotates and plays. It could be possible when she pulled off the ballerina she also pulled out the drum. But since this is a Toy music box, there’s a lever that stops the governor from spinning, as you close the box, so the music pauses. (the governor is in front of the golden sphere that holds the spring) Maybe try to leave the box open for a while, it could possibly unwind itself, and start back up again, but if it doesn’t maybe check out the drum inside the music box
I prefer the term cylinder to drum. i would try stripping it down. Remember to always remove the comb before working on the governor as to not unleash the devil upon your heirloom. most times though those novelty mechanisms are not made with any regard to integrity. if it was made after 1970 or so and is not sentimental i wouldn’t fix it.
