I can hear the startup chime when I turn it on and the light left of the lock release it on solid white when I turn it on. I can hear the chime when I tap the volume keys. I’ve tried using an external monitor with no luck but I think that has to be selected from my laptop. What else can I do to determine what needs to be replaced? Could it be my video card?
Your best bet is the Nvida GPU issue to get a new logic board. See the link to this question then click on the Contact Center link. Failed GPU Apple Program or Other Repair
It is possible that your particular computer falls in the batch of defective video card MacBook Pros. Here’s the KB article describing it and what you can do: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377 I suggest taking it to an apple store with this information in hand, and they should be able to run a quick test to see if that’s the problem. You’ll notice that even if it’s outside of the warranty period, they will still cover the repair for up to 4 years after the purchase date if this is the source of your problem.
