Chosen Solution
I have a bit of an odd issue that I thought would be a quick fix, but has proved to leave me scratching my head. 3 months ago my iPhone 6 got some slight water damage in my pocket. Shortly after everything seemed to be working just fine until I tried to use Siri and thats where I first noticed my problem. Let me confirm one thing, the microphone works great for phone calls, great with video, great with almost everything, yet when I try use siri, it shows the waves as if there is audio input, but no real audio is getting in. When I attach headphones siri works great! No issues, but when I take them out, I get just waves of audio, but not actually audio coming from me. I have only noticed this effect in one other area and that is with sending voice memos within iMessage, it is just a bunch of static noise. Normal voice memos work great. Any thoughts on a solution I tried replacing the lighting port assembly just now, which includes the microphone on the bottom, but alas, the same issue is still present. I am lost for ideas. All help is appreciated. I can make a quick video if necessary.
Here is my solution! I replaced the “iPhone 6 Front Facing Camera and Sensor Cable” and it now works! This part also contains a small front facing microphone commonly used for siri or facetime. Once I did that my problem was solved! So stoked. Hopefully that helps some of you guys with siri audio issues as well. All i know is siri uses the microphone that is attached to the earpiece and facetime camera, and if that becomes moisture damaged, it will no longer work. 3 Microphones on a phone, couldn’t have added a 4th one eh apple?
Same here everybody, on my 6+, Siri and voice to text stopped working. I was told to use compressed air on the front mic that is in the ear speaker. I don’t use a lot of PSI pressure, but after doing this, both Siri and voice to text start working again. I would like to mention that I have had to do this 2 times in the last 2 months. As soon as I can, I will be switching to a life-proof case. I can only hope that doing that will keep the problem from coming back. Hope this helps someone. Take care.
Same problem for me and i have one solution guys !!! Its with the mic that’s attached near the front earspeaker ! Yeah ! It is ! Jus clean it up or apply sm pressure in it ! It will work like a charm !! Mine worked just fine after that !
My father had the same problem. He took it to the Apple Store and they replaced the glass screen. Apparently the 6 has three microphones and the one for Siri is the same one for face time which is located in the speaker for the ear piece next to the camera on the front of the phone. After the Apple Store replaced the screen which apparently has a new mic attached to it. The phone worked almost better than new as far as Siri goes.
Try replacing the front camera/mic cable assembly. If still not working, I’m afraid you have to do board level repair.
i cleaned up the mics by blowing around the mics with an air compressor as suggested by someone on this site. Works now!!!
I’ve had the exact same problem!! Bought the phone in end of April, by End of June, stopped working. Apple Store replaced the phone, worked fine for another month, same problem. Apple Store replaced the phone AGAIN in July, worked fine until one month later (August) Apple Store replaced the display this time. Worked fine for another month and now (Septmber) crapped out again!!! I am frustrated to say the least. I have had 3 new phones, and one new display in 5 months!! I take care of my phone to the point of being OCD about it, I use the OtterBox Defender case ALWAYS!! And I clean it constantly. Only thing I can think of is that I use it in my car for music plugging into auxiliary through the headphone jack, so maybe the headphone jack thinks there is still something plugged into it even when there isn’t. Frustrating as !&&*, any insight would be welcomed!! Update (04/18/2016) After 4 phone replacements, and one display replacement in 6 months, I switched cases from the fully enclosed OtterBox to a Lifeproof that is sealed around the edges of the display. I am now on 7 months with no issues. Only thing I can think of is that the display was heating up too much in the OtterBox, and since the microphone for Siri and voice to text is in the display, it was frying the microphone as well. Knock on wood, I haven’t had an issue since, and I was having problems every 3 or 4 weeks with every single one that the Apple Store replaced with.
Tried all the turn on /off, reset this, that, blah! Siri worked with headphones. Used compressed air and blasted the mic ports on front and back, ear speaker, and bottom speaker. Started working.
I have the same problem but I found the voice text thing works after 5 seconds of holding the mic button then it records fine. Where as Siri cuts off before 5 seconds has passed so won’t hear me at all unless I put headphones in.
I think I had this same problem. Voice memos works but not Siri. I plugged the iPhone in to a power source and Siri worked. I unplugged it and Siri continues to work!
I had this exact problem and fixed it by blowing in all the open ports along the bottom and the top. Siri and I are now on speaking terms again!
Press hard where ear goes and blow into front speaker.thats what i did with iphone5 and now siri hears me.
Ribbon cable for the front facing camera has the microphone, proximity sensor, ambient light, ear piece speaker and microphone for videos, siri and face time. After trying all the software fixes I changed it out and Siri works fine along with eliminating the high pitch noise my grand kids were complaining about during face time. Microphones just go bad occasionally.
Try this. Take a video of yourself speaking. One video facing you and one video facing away. Do a test count. When I did this i found that there was no sound on the video with lens facing me. That mic happens to be the same mic Siri uses. I bought a new front facing camera flex cable which includes the mic. Problem solved for me. Hope this works for someone.
Iphone6- Siri constantly starting up, interrupting, turned siri off, then voice command did the same. appeared when i used a $9 set of integrated microphone earbuds. Took those out, Siri & Voice command problem stopped. It COULD be dirt in the earphone jack. Lot of dusty work last few days. maybe those earbuds. My quickest bet would be the compressed air treatment mentioned above. For the random mid-night siri attacks, internal mic/cable/connector parts seem more likely. Thanks!
Air compressor is very effective! Thank you!
I actually broke the ribbon cable to the microphone while changing a broken screen, I didn’t know that there were multiples. So far I’ve only notices siri not working but haven’t tried facetime yet. Guess I’ll have to order up another assembly. The other mics work fine for phone calls though.
Hey guys, I am having this exact same issue with my iphone X. On top of that the audio level from the ear speaker is very low and it cant be turned on. Everything else works as it should in the phone. I dont know if iphone x has also a microphone in the ear speaker that is causing this problem but i will try cleaning it with compressed air and see if it works. microphone works great for phone calls, great with video, great with almost everything, yet when I try use siri, it shows the waves as if there is audio input, but no real audio is getting in.
