So what I’m planning to do is make my old Mac is make it into a sharing device for my home network, I will be using nas4free as the OS on it and it will be starting out with a small storage capacity of 250Gb. Also, bonus question, how can I make sure that devices such as Samsung tablets / iPhones / (Apple TV’s maybe) AS WELL AS the household PCs and Macs access the data. For example; Samsung tablet wants to watch a movie. iPhone wants to get music off it. PC wants to get files off it. Thanks for any help!!
Lets change the terminology here a NAS is a focused device for data storage which is not what you have here. In your case you’re using a Mac as a shared resource, in this case the hard drive. So what do you need? Surprisingly nothing! The MacOS (OS-X) inherently has file sharing within it. It can support other Mac’s or iOS devices. As for MS Windows or Android devices you should be able to support them as well, you don’t need NAS4Free. Frankly, it will make things harder to manage than just using MacOS (OS-X). As an example I have a Mac mini with two 2 TB drives which stores my Music, TV shows & Movies. All of which is accessible to my other devices I have in my home (Linux PC, Mac’s, iOS devices & TV’s & Stereo). I’m not sure I follow you where you’re heading with the Telstra Modem. Are you trying to setup the Mac as a router to share a modem? Basically tethering the other connections off of the MacBook Pro?
