Hi there, Short: Macbook Pro won’t boot up from SSD with error “launchd died\nState at Last Exception…” Long: I recently bought a Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB SSD for my Mid 2012 15" Macbook Pro to replace the optical drive. Installation was fine, and then I set about reformatting the drive as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) drive. I then booted up the computer in recovery mode, and used Time Machine restore on the SSD. After this, I was told to start it up, then go to System Prefs > Startup Disks > and select the SSD to start up from. When I then tried to restart I got the error: pid 1 exited (signal 0, exit 1)panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff80059c4594): “launchd died\nState at Last Exception:\n\n”@/SourceCache/ etc… It then brings up the error screen saying that the Macbook Pro has had an error and will need to restart, starting cycle again. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I found a guide here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/410… that says to do what mayer says above, but then to use SuperDuper (you can get a free trial) to “restore” the HDD to the SSD. Job done!

First try switching the drives. The slower BUS of the optical drive may be your issue. Besides, you want the SSD as your start up drive with the fastest BUS. I’d do just the SSD first and see if it runs OK, then hook up the optical drive hard drive.
