My video cuts out after a period of use - no backlight or picture. The interesting part is that the longer I leave it turned off, the longer it will have video the next time I try to use it. I’m going to replace the thermal paste in case it’s an overheating issue but if that doesn’t work I’m assuming it’s going to be a deeper, component level problem. Any ideas?
@Joshua - We really need to do more to diagnose the problem here. Both John & Sunny are sending down the wrong path until we verified what the issue is you’re just playing ‘whack a mole’. OK, let’s see if we can narrow down the problem. Do you have access to an external display if you do see if the problem shows up with it. If you don’t take a flashlight and shine it through the back side of the displays Apple logo (a poor mans backlight) are you able to see the faint outlines of your desktop icons? Let us know what you discover.
i have the same identical problem, i know reflow in oven is not professional but i fix my problem for now. i personally done gradually couple of time , last 7,30min at 220°c make turn on again without lost the screen. with gfx 1.7.5 in maverick seems like stable using only hd3000 with out change to the nvidia.
If you feel comfortable doing it your board needs a reflow if done by in oven or heat gun I would recommend practice on a junk motherboard and purchasing some no clean reflow flux and probably some kapton tape if not there are repair services that do this on the Bay i’m 98% positive this is your problem most service guys will reflow it if you can spring for the new chip even better.
Reflowing the board is a waste of time. You can’t fix a bad GPU by getting it reflow. you need to replace it. By the age of the computer i feel like is better for you invest in a new macbook. Because that computer had a known GPU issue but apple end the GPU recall on that model already. Good luck!
