Hi! My MacBook Pro was on the table with only the power adapter, the TV and a mouse connected to it. I wanted to plug in my iPhone into the USB port. As the USB cable touched the MacBook Pro everything went dead like at a short circuit or when there is no power at the house. I was thinking after that I might have mixed up the cables, and the one I was trying to use was the one I keep in the car, what is not an original apple product. Now, not even the power adapters green/orange LED shows when I attach it to the system, is it totally dead? I tried every 10 sec start and so on, but it does absolutely nothing. Any advice?
Do you live in a dry and/or cold climate where you have a lot of static electricity? From what you describe here it sounds like you zapped your system via the USB cord. The USB ports do have a fuse element to protect the system from a short from the device you are plugging in, it does not protect the system from a static discharge to your system. Sadly, you will likely need a new logic board here. You may also want to make sure you have a good surge suppressor outlet strip that all of the devices are plugged into and check your outlets wiring. You can get a cheap outlet checker at the hardware store to make sure the outlet is wired correctly. You’ll need to hire a good electrician to check the houses grounding services and you might also want him to put in a whole house surge suppressor as well which helps when lighting hits nearby. Lastly, get a spray bottle with some cheap dish soap 1 to 20 mix with water to spray the carpet and cloth seat covers to lessen the static charge you have so when you touch things you don’t zap them.
