I recently replaced the battery for my Mid-2012 MBP using the iFixit battery replacement kit and instructions. Everything booted up without a hitch, worked great for about 2 hours, and then shut down randomly. I’ve been able to reboot using my magsafe charger, and then unplug and run off battery power. However, this only works for about 10 minutes before the computer acts as if the battery is suddenly disconnected and shuts down again. Things I’ve already tried: SMC resetPRAM reset Anyone have suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I’ve also tried everything to fix it: all resets, full charge, discharge, but nothing helped. Then I contacted the support. They said it is probably a defect and offered me a replacement battery, which arrived quickly. I replaced the battery again (with the simple “cord-technique”), made the SMC reset and voilá - now it works! :-) — if the battery gets very low my MacBook manages to hibernate correctly now. Thanks a lot to the ifixit-team!! thumbsup Michael

I had the exact same thing on a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012). Installed the new battery, and my computer flips off every few minutes—once right in the middle of booting it back up. Tried and SMC reset twice, just in case I did it wrong. Let the battery completely drain, then charged all the way back up in case that was it too. It would do it regardless of whether the computer was charging or not. Below are coconutBattery readings.

Update (01/27/2019) Looking at the timeline of posts, it seems like a rash of these happening in the last four months to Mid-2012 MBP batteries, which makes me think iFixit has some manufacturing glitch in a batch of these batteries. Especially since the manufacturing date of my battery is from June 2018, a couple months before the first problem of 2018 was reported on here.

Please download and run Coconut Battery, then post your results so we can get a better idea of what happening with your battery. http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutba… UPDATE Thanks for posting. The battery has 0 cycles. Let it charge completely up then run it down all the way and then recharge. Is this an OEM battery?

Make sure it’s only shutting down when on battery power and not when it’s plugged into a MagSafe adapter. Try reseating the battery connector. If it’s still having issues when on battery power, then it sounds like something’s wrong with the battery cells and they’re unreliable. It doesn’t happen often with new batteries but it does happen, I’ve seen then happen even with Apple’s own batteries. I’d suggest asking for an exchange at that point.

Same issue here. Also MBP mid-2012. Did you manage to fix it?

Same issue. My battery runs very well. It has 7381 mAh (original 6900 mAh) . But the Macbook Pro wont goes standby mode just before cut off the battery power. The battery consumes all its power and the machine suddenly loses its power. This error occured after battery replacement with this oem battery.

I am experiencing the same problem with my Mid-2012 MBP 13” A1278 after replacing battery with iFixit replacement. PRAM and SMC reset did not resolve the problem, only reverting back to the old battery did.

I am running into exact same issue. Got new battery from iFixit few days ago. Unfortunately have to take battery out to use MacBook without shutting down unexpectedly.

Run a power hungry program like a GPU benchmark if it dies right away the battery can’t provide enough peak current, this is common on aftermarket batteries. the bms inside the battery does not calculate C rating Going off the gas gauge data provided, the battery is a refurb unit, new cells re-programmed pcb (current capacity and cycle count are reset, hence why its over 100%) The cells DO hold X amount of charge BUT they can’t deliver enough current when needed, the same issue is what happens to recalled iPhones recently (that was due to old age but same result) Just cheap cells….. :)

Hey all, OP here. It appeared that my first battery was defective. iFixit was great about sending a replacement, and everything worked great after installing the new battery. It’s been 1.5 years and no issues at all! Apologies for the delayed response, but I hope this helps anyone still running into the issue. Contact iFixit support and they’ll take it from there. Cheers, Peter

Hi all. I’ve tried 3 different batteries from ifixit but they are ALL defective. First 2 died the first cycle, the one I use now works but Mac shuts down at the 20% mark… tired of sending them

My battery came from NewEgg but I’m having the same issues… My MAC runs without issues as long as the power cable is connected… Has to be something other than the battery..
