Hello, since couple of days I’m having issues with the display of my MacBook. Yesterday the boot up Apple screen was showing the loading of the os, but when it reached the login screen the screen was getting black. Even though the backlight keyboard was showing that the os was starting correctly. Since today I only get a black screen, even tough the startup sound is correct and the backlight keyboard is working correctly. I have tried to: -enter safe mode -reset smc and nvram -reboot the system with P+R+command+option -reboot several time -try to enter recovery mode -try to attach the hdmi to an external source (to be sure that the problem was not the screen) My fear is that either the discrete or the integrate graphic card are not working correctly anymore, but in order to force the usage of one of the two I need to access macOS. If this is the case I will have have to substitute the logic board. Do you have any suggestion to better deep these analysis? If the logic board will have to be substituted, what do you suggest me to do? Try by myself, take it to an Icenter or buy a brand new one? Thank you, Giulio Update (06/03/2019) I just noticed this guide: MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012 I/O Board Cable Replacement How can I be sure that this might be the issue? Is there any check or analysis to be conducted? And how can exclude that is not the logic board? thank you, giulio

You didn’t say what happened when you plugged in an external screen thus I’d speculate nothing changed in the pattern, partial boot and then black screen. If that’s the case, then yes, you probably have a GPU issue. If you use your Mac for professional purposes and need the discrete GPU a logic board replacement would be your best option. Otherwise you may investigate disabling the GPU and just use integrated graphics, there are several alternatives available, from primitive to sophisticated solutions, Google around and you’ll get a good picture. If you go for board replacement you can manage yourself too, just take plenty of time and patience and you’ll be fine, being concerned about mistakes is usually a sufficiently good approach. Here’s a guide, just in case: MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012 Logic Board Replacement

Hey guys, just came back from the apple store because my MacBook Pro 15 retina from 2012 have screen/GPU problems. The screen goes black when I edit on Lightroom or read a 4K video or something that requires some power. I also have no light on the Apple logo in the back of the screen and no signal on HDMI or mini DVI. The technicien at the apple store think it’s from the screen, an alimentation problème when the computer over heat. Apparently everything is connected and when the screen goes black it also cut off every video Chanel so HDMI and mini DVI also. This happen since I’ve installed Catalina, I was able to downgrade to HighSierra with a usb bootable but the problem is still here when the computer over heat. I was wondering if you guys have any confirmation that when the screen goes black it also cut off the video on hdmi ? Apple is charging me 680€ for changing the screen or the motherboard/GPU. I’m trying to change the screen myself if it’s that. But I don’t know..
