Hi, I have a late 2006 MacBook and I’ve noticed that the fan gets really loud and it gets REALLY HOT! I’ve had the machine for about a year and don’t know any information on it before it came into my hands. What steps can I try to try and reduce the heat from the CPU? I’m thinking on replacing the thermal paste on the machine as it most likely has over 10 years since it has seen new thermal paste. P.S. I’m running MacOS Yosemite and all my apps are up to date.
Sounds to me like the heat sink is not doing it’s job. Some for these are liquid filled. Examine the tip where the crimp is and look for an oily looking residue. If you find it, replace the heat sink: MacBook Core 2 Duo Heat Sink Replacement
Have you removed the casing/chassis covers yet? You may want to make sure the fan/cpu is clear of dust and debri. Also check the ventilation for obstructions. Re-applying the thermal paste is the last step I would do after checking for these things.
