I’m helping someone who dropped their MacBook and they “think” it hit the ground near the hinge. There is a dark smudge on the back corner near where the MagSafe power adapter connects. When I boot it up the screen displays all vertical pastel colored lines. Pretty but not helpful. I was able to boot it into target firewire mode and get a copy of the user folder using my iMac so the data is safe. I ran disk utility on the volume and the S.M.A.R.T status is verified. The Apple logo on the lid is still lit. I’ve had the MagSafe adapter in for over 45 minutes now and it still seems to be charging (orange light not green) so I’m not sure if something is damaged there. The MacSafe adapter works fine in other MacBooks so the problem isn’t there. Any advice would be appreciated. I found the directions for changing the screen here but I’m not sure about the charging device. It’s model A1181.
The LCD screen may be damaged or not. It could only be a near disconnected video (LVDS) cable that cause the stripes in the screen. I would first connect the macbook to an external monitor to check for graphic card malfuction then, open the macbook and verify all internal cables/sockets connections. Is the display misaligned with the case, any damage to the hinges ? Concerning the battery and charging status you may check in the Apple Menu “About this mac…” -> More infos -> Alimentation (sorry my system is french so it may be another menu title) to verify the charging system status.
My sister dropped my macbook pro and it now has vertical lines going down the right side of the screen! Is it fixable and at what cost?
