ive been working on this macbook for about a week and what was once just a matter of reinstalling the os and replacing the battery rapidly turned into an issue with finding the boot directory and finally to it not powering on or even receiving power. ive tried to turn it on with the power on pads but even that doesnt work. any idea what the problem might be?

Sounds like the logic board is toasted here ;-{ Unless you have the needed skills, equipment, schematics and access to the needed parts you’ll either need to send the board out for repair or replace it. No MagSafe LED implies the charging logic is not working on the logic board. Failure of the onboard battery checker implies the battery is below the needed charge level or is not getting signal from the logic board. As you state you can see power on the logic board from the battery that also ties into the charging logic having problems as the circuit within it acts as a switch to pump power to the logic board and/or the battery (voltage comparator & MOSFET logic).
