Chosen Solution
So there was a fall with the laptop and the result was one of the screen hinges is loose along with the part of the laptop that is loose too, see photos below It feels like the right hinge may break apart, can this be fixed with ease. I use a iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit but overall never seen one taken apart. Any help would be welcome! Product Name - Lenovo Z50-75 Model Name - 80EC Machine Type Model 80EC00HFUK
@nathairglas this is hard to evaluate without taking it apart and seeing the actual damage. Download the maintenance manual for your computer from here.. The Lenovo G50-30,G50-45, G50-70, Z50-70, Z50-75 use the same manual. Once you have it disassembled post some more images of your damage so we can see what you see.
Ok so i found somewhat a solution to this problem. It is probably not the ideal solution but it alteast will keep your laptop from falling apart for hopefully a good while. As you can see in the following pictures i had this exact same issue
So what i did to ‘fix’ it was to use 2 washers and 2 midlong laptop screws. Then the idea was to simply put the washers on top of the base and screw the screws in, in this way using the base itself as support for the upperside of the laptop.
I then realized on one side that screw hole itself it actually also broken off and somewhere being loose in the laptop, i managed to get the broken pieces out of there.
So if your screw holes itself are intact you can just use something like the screws you can see in the picture above, this also worked on one side of my laptop, but since on the other side the screw hole itself is broken off, i decided to use a bigger screw and use the metal plate inside the laptop itself to screw it in. This is the result:
And as you can see, it is holding together right now, and will atleast keep the laptop from falling apart for now.
Hi! Paul You need to disarm the computer, enter Ebay with the serial number and brand of your laptop and buy the pieces that are broken and change them. With the service manual it is easy to disassemble and assemble the computer. Never use glue or other product to stick your machine. Stick does not work specially on the hinges because they are too strong. They are strong for support the weight of the monitor and they will broke again. Sometime if you search well you can find broken used computers for parts at a good price on Ebay.
it looks like one of your screw anchors on the housing inside was broken off. you may need to apoxy the frame shut if thats the case. however, and less likely, the screw may have come loose on its own, and replacing the screw would fix it.
I don’t know how to fix that but here’s a tip…. DONT. MESS. WITH. THE. LEFT. SIDE. AND /DONT/ DROP IT!!!
Hi Paul, I believe I had the exact same problem with the exact same laptop and found your post when looking for better solutions than mine… Anyway, what I did is to disassemble the laptop: first the back panel that slides off after you remove the 3 screws, then to open the rest of the chassis you will have to remove all the other screws you can see, the hard disk, the fan, unplug the keyboard and remove the dvd reader). At this point I found out that the screws that keep the hinge in place had torn out the plastic around them and came free. My current solution was to loose the hinge (you can do it easily with a small wrench, just unscrew a bit the bolt on the side) and reassemble everything. Now the hinge does not force the chassis open anymore, but the screen is held in place only by the other hinge. Not ideal, I know, that’s why I was looking for other solutions.
My computer has had the same problem for while now. I started to find the screws all over and no matter what the screws keep on falling and the left side of the screen barely useful. I don’t move the computer any longer, I dont close the lid and the screws are still falling. Frustrated, tired and soon to be laptopless…
I Have this exact problem on the same model, on both sides under the hinges the screw sockets on the base have broken off, causing the exact same issue on both sides as can be seen in the pictures above. You could probably buy another base for this laptop on ebay, but it this is a common issue due to lack of quality of the plastic then most likely the same will just happen again over time. I’m going to try to think of a DIY solution for this, if i have found something i’ll let it know in this thread.
Hello Guys, I do have the same problem,the place where charger plugs on that base corner screw holder has damaged and it is affecting everything like While playing Games laptops fan goes down. Chassis remains a bit open from the left and screen goes tilted towards left.
Had this issue for a while with a Dell laptop (Inspiron 13, discontinued model). Found that if I closed the screen and added a little pressure then everything clicked back into place (Note, if the hinge itself has done something weird, apply a little pressure to the corner the hinge is on and then close it. I found that this held everything in place as I moved it). If there is still a visible screw in the back of the computer where the hinge belongs, then just tighten that. After a while, it will need tightening again, but if you keep an eye on it then you should be able to leave it as is and just check it frequently. If there is no screw, there was an answer before mine that might help a bit better.
Note: I am NOT a technician. I am just passing on information for a fix I found worked for me. The hinge in my device comes unscrewed because the screw in the middle of the back is missing, so it appears to be putting pressure on the other hinges. I do have to tighten the screw every couple of weeks, but I haven’t had it break as badly as the original photos showed since I tried this fix.
I had the same problem. What I did was get a slightly longer screw, drill a small hole from the hinge through the back of the screen case, and put a washer on each end of the screw and secure it on the back of the laptop with a nut. Doesn’t look great, but does the job!
