I try connecting my ipod to my PC and I have to hold my ipod and move it around so the PC can pick it up and when I charge my ipod I have to wiggle the charger around when its connected to the ipod so it can find it.
You may either need a new USB cable or a new dock connector. It does sound like either you have bend, or broken pins, or fractures on your dock connector solder. The dock connector is soldered to the logic board and a bit tedious to replace. The part itself is relatively inexpensive. Shows you a bit more of what is involved. Good Luck
