My understanding is that my RAM is soldered to my mother/logic board so I’d have to replace the logic board in order to increase from the 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM I currently run. I’m constantly fighting with the computer bogging down and was bummed when I saw that it’s more involved than it used to be. So…is my research correct? Is this going to involve deep surgery? And if so, is it worth the effort/cost? And where would you recommend I find the logic board/RAM combo I’d need?
You’re right, all retinas have had soldered modules since their first release, but you’re out of luck if you’re looking for a RAM upgrade, as to jump from 16GB to a higher RAM configuration you’ll have to look for a 2018 MBP to be able to get to 32GB. Boards of the two different models are not compatible though. A 15” with 16GB onboard should be a pretty decent and fast machine, unless you’re into big size photo or video editing. Make sure you have enough free space available on your SSD, neded for smooth operation and have a look every now and then at Activity Monitor to see if something is acting strange and uselessly keeping your CPU busy in some stray task. Other than that, no big upgrades would be available.
