There are two different models of the optical drive used in the PlayStation 4, both seemingly identical (even in terms of compatibility; the 490A and the 860A. What is the difference between them, and if I have one that still works, would there be any reason to switch to the other?

The difference is that they use different lasers and different laser ribbon cables. They are not interchangeable. The daughterboard on one will not fit the daughterboard on the other so there is no way to swap them. Hope this helps.
