I remembe the iPhone 8 screens where firmware locked and unreplaceable. Is that still the case or was that fixed? Thanks

The screens can be replaced, the issue is with the Ambient Light Sensor and True Tone colours. There is a programmer that allows you to transfer over the ALS info to the replacement screen for devices that are not on iOS 12 but as far as I know, the True Tone functionality is still disabled.
