I’m asking out of curiosity here. It appears that the digitizer is behind the LCD on the iPhone 5s, but has traces running through the LCD. Is this true, or am I imagining things?

Front glass is just glass. The LCD has touch sensors built in, there is no separate digitizer.

front glass is certainly not the digitizer. if your touch screen and LCD are working fine , you can indeed replace the glass only. however leave that in the hands of the guys that do this full time. not a job to do yourself

Coming from a refurbishing background the digitizer is not the glass. Check out this blog post if you would like to go a little bit more in depth https://stsparts.us/blogs/lcdrefurbishin

i believe the digitizer itself is just the glass, running in sync with the lcd screen

Hey there Josiah. ;d Basically The Digitiser and the LCD screen are separate just like any other iDevice, however.. the iPhone 5, 5S, 6, 6S and so on (as with some iPods?) have their LCD and Digitiser surfaces GLUED together. The glue in question is called LOCA, which stands for Liquid Optically Clear Adhesive. This glue is basically poured on top of the LCD surface while being held in a mold then the digitiser is placed on top. Like a sammich! <3 The glue is then set dry by using a UV handheld lamp over the course of roughly 20-30 seconds? (unsure how long). This practice can be successful with a few minor impurities, such as glue bleeding back under the LCD panel (which looks like a blotch at the edge of the screen) or foreign artifacts such as your own hair being trapped underneath. x'3 So to answer your question, in layman’s terms; YES! Technically, NO! When you buy a screen replacement, the LCD and Digitiser usually come pre-bound, as it saves quite a lot of hassle. However you CAN buy the two pieces separate if you’ve got the guts to run the game and assemble it all yourself. ;p I hopes I helped! :3 Edit: Oops! It seems I’ve answered a bit late as a user had edited / deleted their post and bumped a month old thread to the top of the board. >;c Marie!
