iMac “Core i7” 2.93 27-Inch (Mid-2010) So I have a Mid 2010 27" iMac and was curious if anyone knows if I can upgrade the processor or anything else even higher than what it is? Either that or I didn’t know if it’s possible to upgrade anything else in the machine to make it run faster. I’ve already maxed out the ram and added an SSD, so I’m not afraid to pull the thing apart. I’ve upgraded and built a few PC’s too, so I have the know how. So the only question is if it’s possible? I don’t know enough about Mac’s internals compatibility to just throw parts at it blindly. So if anyone has any insight that would be much apreciated.
To start with the system you have is the top of the line of this series. The CPU socket your system has is no longer being used, nor did Intel offer any better CPU’s for it. You talk about having maxed out the RAM are you running 16 GB or 32 GB? With the newer firmware your system can support 32 GB of RAM! But before you make that jump are you hitting a memory limitation or are you hitting a threading or crunching issue? This is where knowing what wall you are hitting matters. How about running Activity Monitor and see what it shows here. If you can give us a clue on what you are running that would help too.
