Hy, A little introduction: I’m subject of Murphy’s law here, click here If you don’t know it yet. Just after formatting my iPod, my internal drive broke down, and just after I got my MacBook back with a new drive (replaced under warranty), the drive of my back-up broke down, which means I lost all my data and especially my music. I screwed the external hard drive open, it was a WD My Book, knowing it’s nowhere near warranty anymore. I looks like the chip burned down (actually it smells like that also) and I was wondering if I couldn’t simply replace that chip. I know it could be possible to get my data back by sending it to a specialized company but they will charge my at least 500€, and being a student it’s a lot of money for me. Of I forget to say, I still have hope getting my data back like that because when I plug it in a sata to usb dock the drive still powers up and I can hear it spinning So if anybody could tell me if this would be possible, and if so, how I would be very thankful! Alexander

I would drop the drive in an external SATA enclosure Firewire or USB or both and go on down the road. If it is the board on the hard drive, just get a new board off eBay. Your data should be safe.
