I’m thinking about upgrading my late-2015 iMac with an SSD. Currently it only has a 1TB HDD, I saw that apple now has these new SSPOLARIS drives which are way faster than the SSDs that were shipped with my iMac’s generation. I have the following iMac: Apple Model No: A1419 (EMC 2834) Model ID: iMac17,1 I noticed that the SSPOLARIS drive has a slightly different form-factor but has the same socket. From a compatibility standpoint, is it possible to install this SSPOLARIS in my iMac?
The speed difference has a lot to do with the width of the PCI lanes the newer systems support. Your system only has a PCIe 3.0 x2 SSD where as the newer Mid 2017 27" iMac’s (iMac18,3) have a PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD. Reference: The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs. Sadly Cody has incomplete information on the iMac’s and his section on the iMac (Late 2015) is a bit confusing. You’ll need to make sure you’ve got Sierra installed as it applies a firmware update. That should do it and then add in your new Apple blade SSD BeetsTech - Apple Solid State Drive (2TB) or if the 2TB drive is a bit to much for your pocket here’s the 1 TB drive: BeetsTech - Apple Solid State Drive (1TB)
