It wasn’t dropped recently or knowingly mistreated. Every time we plug it into ANY computer (we’ve tried 3), using any USB (we’ve tried 2) cord it freezes iTunes and doesn’t even show up on iTunes. If I try to look at it using “computer” (using Windows Vista or Windows 7) it freezes that too. We tried running the diagnostic test. It won’t go past detecting “FW”. Which I don’t understand. I tried looking FW up and it looks like something this iPod doesn’t even use. I have looked at all 13 of the support pages, clicking the titles that looked helpful and one suggested reformatting by placing the iPod into disk mode, then going into iTunes. I can’t even get the iPod into disk mode! It doesn’t respond at all. It is supposedly empty: no music, videos, podcasts, photos or contacts but it claims that 48.5 GB are being used with only 25.7 GB free (it is an 80GB) and all 48.5 GB in use fall into the “other” category. It says it has three games, but none launch. Ummmm…. I think that is everything. As you can undoubtedly tell, I am no technological genius. Just a Mommy who has been able to follow clear (read: ‘idiot-proof’) instructions in the past to fix computer issues. I’d love to be the hero and fix my teenager’s favourite “toy”. It has been like this a few weeks now and she really misses it. I am NOT replacing it. Any and all help will be gratefully appreciated. Thank you
bayleigh70, it does sound to me like you have a HDD issue. I believe that you are due for a new one. You can double check it if you have a USB to Zif adapter and test the HDD as a separate drive. I believe that it will resolve your troubles if you replace that drive. FW does refer to Firewire and the Ipod classic is set up for charging through firewire. So in your menu, it will hang up on FW since it can not find a firewire connection. That is normal on the diagnostic menu. Let us know how it is going. Good Luck. iPod Classic Hard Drive Replacement
I also have an ipod that is doing something similer. I have replaced the hard drive, hdd ribbon, battery and logic board. I replaced the logic board twice because I thought I got a bad one the first time. The new logic board didn’t help it dose the same thing other then i can get mine in disk mode. after I put it in disk mode and plug it in it freezes itunes and won’t show up. I did have it show up once the very first time I pluged it in. When I tried to restore it came back with a unknown error 1437. After that is when it started freezing itunes. Help me please. Thank you
I am going to have to look up what “USB to Zif” means! Thank you for replying. I don’t want to spend any money on it unless I know that is going to fix the problem. Even then, it is still quite a bit of cash for the part. Not sure I want to spend that much… It is definitely something to think about.

you can also sell the damaged one on ebay they usually bring 20-30 dollars for a 30gb the 80gb might bring more and help with some of the cost of the new one
