@meatgenie definitely start off with a new battery. Carefully when you use this guide. For step 18 is tricky since you can easily break the connector of the board. I use a small paper clip bend into an L-shape and gently pull the clip straight up. Get the battery from here once you figured out if it is a thick or thin model (check the number on your battery to get an exact replacement. Since this iPod is a bear to open, I would check to ensure it is not covered under any kind of warranty with the company you bought it from.
