Chosen Solution
So, pretty much as the title says. When I turn the phone on, it displays the apple logo, but sometimes it’ll turn pink, distort and it sometimes boots up to the start up menu… After a short while it might decide to become unresponsive and reboot the phone. It’s a constant loop. Has anyone came across this before and if so, how do you go around diagnosing the problem? I get a feeling a simple DFU restore won’t fix it. It seems like it’s sustained impact damage and possibly ruptured something on the logic board. I can’t do soldering repairs yet, so chances are it’s a sell on item. I’d like to know how to troubleshoot this issue though, cause you need to learn somehow. Thanks, Craig. Edit: This is what it has looked like, it’s done this before and it has also pixelated and even moved the apple logo on the boot screen. Ironically the thing isn’t doing it now, but still crashes. This is clearly a board issue. Can you send me in the right direction as to how to diagnose the error or the failed chip etc. on the board? As I’m trying to learn this stuff for myself, thank you!
The above isn’t my image, but it’s looked exactly like that during bootup before. I’m also getting error 12 on the DFU restore on 3Utools.
Please do your restore via iTunes so that we can see what the error number is; 3uTools error codes don’t always have much meaning. However, a pink screen like this can be caused by several issues. You don’t say it explicitly so I’ll ask, have you tried a (preferably known-good) replacement screen to see if the problem persists? If it you have and it does, then try disconnecting subsystems from the logic board (battery first!) and boot the phone in a minimalist configuration (battery and charge port). Connect it to 3uTools and see if the device boots and stays on. If that works, then add one component at a time to isolate the faulty component. If it doesn’t work, then you need to start probing the logic board. Check all of the display related power lines, then check the main PMIC outputs to see if anything is shorted. The board and it’s symptoms will guide you…you just have to ask it questions, just like a doctor would if you came in complaining of abdominal pains. If you want to do board level troubleshooting, then you will need to get the schematic and boardview. I’m not sure if they are available in the wild for free but if not, ZXW or other pro-level tools have the info.
