this question has been asked before but i wanted to add a couple of details to see whether anyone has any further experience on this topic. as the title says: the phone turns on, i receive notifications on my watch. the touch screen was working but now it doesn’t anymore – or maybe it still does but it went into some bizarre locked mode that requires more than just code and face id. additionally: there might be water damage, as i think some of the speakers might leak water if exposed to it.before turning black it did glitch for a while, maybe 30s or one minute, and then it went completely black – this makes me think it’s not a backlight issue. any idea, besides “replace the screen”? also: unrelated here as it’s a “repairing” forum but, do you have any clue whether i can at least access the data / back it up etc.? thanks!

The only way to test if it’s a screen is to try a known good one. I see the X screens go black quite often as they have a design flaw in them I think it had to do with one of the IC chips on the screen. If you’re after your data, again, you’ll need a working screen to interface with it or at least know where the messages appear when you plug it into a computer. You’ll need to type in the passcode and then allow the phone to trust the computer when it prompts you. If you can and you’re up to it, take it to a local and reputable independent repair shop and ask if they can test a new screen. Odds are they may have one in stock as iPhone is the most popular device we repair!
