About a week ago my iPhone 3GS died and will not charge using any charger (pc or wall). The reset function didn’t help so it seemed like there was a hardware problem. I took the phone to a technician who has tried replacing the battery but to no avail. He told me that if there’s a problem with the motherboard then it’d be too expensive to replace and the phone is dead forever. The frustration is that there are some important photos and videos of my baby daughter that i can’t afford to lose so am happy to spend whatever it takes to get this up and running long enough to retrieve my data. What should I do/try next?
Matt, Mitch Rush is pretty much spot on with the price. To retrieve any information from a dead iPhone will require a NAND flash memory reader as well as the appropriate software with it. The only places that will do this are data recovery places as well as crime labs. One of the things you do want to remember is when you did a last restore on your phone, this may have some of the data you want. The other thing to try is to fix your phone. Take a closer look at the dock connector, make sure you do not have any bend or broken pins, check for corrosion. Check all the fuses on the logic board. You say it does not charge, what happens when you use a charged battery. It might give you enough time to back up your data. Also, check for the power management IC and see if that is burned. If you have a multimeter, you can check the SMD components in the images attached and see if you have continuity. Otherwise apply jumpers as shown.Hope this helps, good luck.
You can get all your photo’s without fixing your phone if you take it to someone that is set up to do so, it takes a $1500 piece of hardware that plugs into your charge-data port, it retrieves it and then burns to it to disk, Apple can do it but would surely cost more than most, some phone carriers have them and sometimes do it for free, some phone shop’s have them, good luck, If this Answer is helpful please remember to return and mark it Accepted
