Chosen Solution
I recently decided to fix my old iPhone 6 Plus. After replacing the screen the phone showed the low battery symbol when I plugged it in, but that is it. When I press the power button and the home button, I can get it to show the apple logo but after a few seconds it turns back off to the low battery symbol. I was thinking it is a battery problem, but I just want confirmation before I buy another battery.

It may well be just a bad battery..if it was left drained for quite some time it might have gone below the safety voltage threshold and become zombified. Being a cheap and straightforward replacement a new battery would be the first thing to try in my opinion. It may also be a charging circuit issue but there’s no way to tell without tests.
