I replaced my first iPhone 7 screen and initially had some problems getting the home button cable to connect - is this usually the case or do you reckon I had dodgy screen? is there any specific tricks on getting it to click in properly first time? any help would be appreciated!

I have this issue a lot it’s down to how long / short the home button connector on the screen is. What you need to do is not let the home button flex adhesive stick fully into place until you plug the cable in first. In most cases you end up not being able to align the home button flex to the plastic bump on the screen frame which is okay, it should fit in fine under the metal bracket that is screwed in with 4 tri-wing screws.
